Dr Ali Alavi


Dr Ali Alavi is a registered Neurosurgeon and Spine Surgeon in Australia and United Kingdom. He completed his neurosurgery training in 2016, after working in Cambridge, Birmingham and Nottingham as a clinical research fellow and specialist registrar since 2007. This was followed with a World Federation of Neurosurgical Societies accredited skull base fellowship at the International Neuroscience Institute in Hannover, Germany. Dr Alavi later gained further experience as a Royal College of Surgeons Senior Clinical Fellow in Skull Base Neurosurgery in Leeds when in collaboration with Leeds university, he established the Leeds Endoscopic Anterior Skull Base Course and Endoscopic Skull Base website, www.endoscopicskullbase.net. This is followed by senior clinical fellowship in complex spine surgery at The Centre for Spinal Studies and Surgery, Queens Medical Centre, Nottingham.

He has an academic oriented career and been involved in data collation, analysis and presentation in a number of retrospective and prospective studies in neuro-oncology, neuro-trauma and skull base neurosurgery. He has had a number of national and international presentations and publications and has won a prestigious award from the society of British Neurological surgeons for his outstanding research in the field of pituitary pathologies and head injury.

He moved to Australia in 2018 and after working as a consultant neurosurgeon at Brisbane Private Hospital for one year, been appointed as a consultant neurosurgeon at Royal Hobart Hospital since 2019 where he has a broad scope of practice covering all aspects of cranial and spine surgery and has established the endoscopic skull base service in Tasmania. He has private practice at Hobart Private Hospital and Calvary Lenah Valley Hospital in Hobart and Brisbane Private Hospital in Brisbane.
