Dr Laurel Teoh is a Consultant Paediatrician and Paediatric Respiratory and Sleep Physician. She graduated from the University of New South Wales with Honours. She holds postgraduate degrees in general paediatrics, paediatric respiratory as well as paediatric sleep medicine. She has submitted her PhD thesis on asthma exacerbations in children.
After completing her training in Sydney (Children’s Hospital at Westmead and Sydney Children’s Hospital at Randwick) and Perth (Princess Margaret Hospital), she won a travelling fellowship to the Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia, widely considered one of the world’s premier children’s hospitals. She returned to Australia to take up a Staff Specialist position at the Canberra Hospital where she directed the multidisciplinary Paediatric Cystic Fibrosis and Non-Invasive Ventilation services. She was also the Director of Paediatric Physician Education in Canberra and was successful in gaining accreditation for the Canberra Hospital as a training site. She moved to Brisbane in 2017 and took up Senior Staff Specialist positions at the Queensland Children’s and Caboolture Hospitals.
Dr Teoh is also a Senior Lecturer at the University of Queensland and is actively involved in teaching medical students and paediatric junior doctors. She has published widely and presented her research at national and international conferences.
Dr Teoh is an experienced paediatrician specialising in problems affecting the lungs, airways, breathing and sleep in children from birth to young adulthood. She has extensive experience in managing children with asthma, chronic cough, recurrent chest infections, cystic fibrosis (CF), non-CF bronchiectasis, snoring, obstructive sleep apnoea, sleep difficulties including fragmented sleep and/or difficulties with sleep initiation and parasomnias. She is also experienced in managing premature infants with chronic neonatal lung disease and infants on home oxygen. She is able to offer lung function testing for her patients.
Dr Teoh is a member of the Thoracic Society of Australia and New Zealand and the Australasian Sleep Association. She has served as a Specialist Training Committee member for the Royal Australasian College of Physicians overseeing the assessment of the training of respiratory and sleep doctors.
